The Music Theory Program at Imani Music School provides learners with the essential knowledge required to understand, interpret and communicate music accurately across all instruments and styles. Whether taken as a standalone subject or alongside practical instrument training, music theory equips students with the foundation needed for arrangement, composition, improvisation and professional-level musicianship.
The beginner level introduces students to note reading, rhythm patterns, scales, intervals and chord construction. Students learn how music is organized on the staff, how timing is measured using beats and bars and how tones relate harmonically. Exercises include clap-count drills, solfa dictation, basic composition tasks and call-and-response recognition.
Intermediate modules expand into key signatures, harmonic progressions, transposition, cadences and musical form. Students learn how to analyze songs, predict chord movements and write structured notation. This level is especially beneficial for worship leaders, instrumentalists and producers seeking to understand why certain chord progressions work emotionally.
Advanced theory covers modal scales, counterpoint, modulation, voice leading and orchestration principles. Learners may choose to specialize in classical harmony, jazz theory, gospel chord voicings or contemporary music arrangement techniques depending on their performance direction. Ear training, dictation and score reading are integrated to build strong musical intuition.
The program also prepares learners for ABRSM, Trinity or Rockschool theory examinations, should they choose to pursue certification. Alternatively, students may simply apply theory for improvisation, composing original music or directing ensembles with authority.
