The Drum Program at Imani Music School is designed for learners who wish to build rhythm mastery, coordination, and performance control across a wide range of drumming styles. Training covers acoustic drum set, electronic kits, traditional African percussion and band-based rhythmic performance, making it suitable for worship drummers, live band performers, aspiring studio session players and rhythm enthusiasts of all ages.
Beginners start with foundational exercises focused on stick grip, posture and limb independence. Students learn how to coordinate hands and feet through basic groove patterns such as straight beats, shuffle rhythms and simple fills. Emphasis is placed on timekeeping and consistency using metronome-based drills. Even at early stages, students begin playing along with backing tracks to build musical responsiveness rather than isolated practice.
As learners advance, they explore genre-specific grooves such as Gospel Pocket rhythms, Reggae One-Drop, Afrobeat syncopation, Rock Double-Time and Swing/Jazz ride patterns. Techniques such as ghost notes, rimshots, paradiddles, buzz rolls and dynamic accents are introduced to build expressive range. Students also learn drum notation reading and chart interpretation for band rehearsals or church performance environments.
Advanced drummers are guided into solo construction, advanced fills, polyrhythms, linear patterns and live performance discipline. Instruction includes how to set up and tune drums, perform with in-ear monitors or click tracks, and collaborate effectively with bass players and keyboardists. Students preparing for studio work also learn recording etiquette and microphone placement for drum tracking.
Practical performance is a core part of the curriculum, ensuring that every drummer transitions from technique to musical storytelling through rhythm.
Not required initially. Practice pads and simple coordination drills can be done without a full kit. Recommendations for affordable drum kits will be provided as you progress.
